Before delving into detailed descriptions of the chronic miasms, we will consult modern physics to substantiate the subtler aspects of homeopathy and the miasms. The knowledge that has been gained from quantum field theory and particle physics about the structure of the phenomenal universe seems to be echoing the ancient sages and the science of yoga. Modern physics conceives of the universe in terms of dynamic interactions of energy fields or force patterns.
The conclusions that have been reached by quantum theory about subatomic particles are: They have no independent existence of their own; they have both wave-like and particle-like character; and, they may actually be manifestations of interacting fields.
Maxwell, who discovered electromagnetic fields, defines them: “Electromagnetic fields are not states of a medium (the ether) and are not bound down to any bearer, but they are independent realities that are not reducible to anything else.” Similarly Schrodinger came to the conclusion that the fundamental concept underlying the dynamics of matter is form and not substance. Studies undertaken by Dr. Harold Burr of Yale University have shown that all living entities possess an electrical biofield that is intimately associated with physical development and that responds to subtler influences. This biofield is present from the time of conception, and remains ready to respond to every stage of development. It is an organized energy matrix that guides all cellular activity and influences genetic chemistry. Dr. Burr maintained that matter and field are mutually interdependent, with matter influencing field and field influencing matter.
These studies validate the concept of the human organism as having several levels of energy vibrating at different frequencies as described in yogic philosophy. The one truth that emerges from both modern physics and yoga is that not only does the underlying energy field determine the functioning and structure of the physical organism, but the physical form likewise influences the field. In other words, the field is subject to disturbances that are transmitted through the physical and mental bodies just as irregularities of the field are reflected in the psychophysical organism.
Dr. Edward Whitmont, a renowned contemporary homeopath defines field as a kind of transcendental entity never directly observable that we know only through the peculiar behavior of the objects that it affects and through which it manifests itself. The notion that a pervasive energy field exists beneath the visible, material world was also maintained by Paracelsus, who is considered to be the father of Western medicine. According to him, the vital force in man radiates within and around him like a luminous sphere. It must be remembered that these underlying energy fields are dynamic patterns of energy and not static, fixed entities. By definition, whatever is alive has an underlying characteristic vibration, peculiar to its individuality. Similarly the morbific agent as described by Hahneman has its own corresponding dynamic energy field, which is constantly changing and in motion. Without motion, there can be no life.
