In August 1992, Swami Rama, as Founder President, penned the proposal titled ‘An integrated Primary health care/Rural Development project for the mountainous Garhwal and Kumaon region of Uttaranchal India’ which became a guide for us.

The purpose of the proposal to establish and evaluate demonstration village health and social development project in the rural mountain regions of Garhwal and Kumaon, Uttaranchal. It was an outline for a pilot project that established the core structural elements for a comprehensive, modern, hospital-supported, health and social development system.  It was designed to be expandable in increasing organizational units from a population base of 1500 to 100,000.  It was to move  from the hospital to reach directly to individual households, travelling through a health service pathway to expand into education and developmental issues, with a particular focus on women and guided by the priorities and decisions made at village-level thus ensuring sustained community self-development.

he focus was to be on improving the health, education and social development of all children (both girls and boys); improving the status and welfare of women through maternal health, education, and income generation activities and ensure health and social development of individuals, communities, and region serviced by the Institute.

As we start this blog, I have great pleasure in informing that we have met what he sought.  As we enter the third decade of our work, it is important to share our experiences along the journeys being made – whether it is with migrant population, tribal health and development or reaching out to the vulnerable in the populations that we serve.

With this, my best wishes to the entire RDI team to share their journey stories with all.

Namaste.
